Single Vision Reading Glasses Are A Must For Some
When you cannot ignore the fact that you just cant hold anything far enough from you to be able to read it comfortably, it may be time to consider single vision reading glasses. They come in a couple of basic styles; full lenses and Ben Franklin style half glasses.
The full reading glasses work well for someone who spends a lot of time doing close work. If you look up and across the room with these, things will appear blurry. I actually have trouble walking around while wearing mine for that reason. The half glasses allow you to concentrate on close work, but you can look over them to see things in the distance. Many people who have never needed glasses in the past start out with reading glasses.
There are some handy little foldable reading glasses that are ideal for checking out a menu in a dimly lit restaurant or a tiny price tag. These are often made in many fashion colors and patterns and fit neatly into a little case in your handbag or pocket. There are also some credit card sized magnifiers that work nicely for quick use. Just do not try to read with them. It is nearly impossible. I know my grandmother had one of those magnifiers that hung around her neck. She did a lot of fine sewing and quilting and this was ideal for doing very detailed work. Many hobbyists who work on miniatures find these useful as well.
Reading glasses can be custom made at an optical dispenser. These are made just for your particular needs. Ready made reading glasses are much less expensive and come in many fashion looks. My grandmother called them drug store glasses because in her day, thats where you could purchase them. My mother-in-law referred to them as magnifiers and insisted they were not real glasses. She believed you had to go the eye doctor for real glasses. I think one reason they are popular is the price. You can have a pair in the house, in your car, or at your office. Some stores actually sell them in multi packs. If you break them or lose them, they are cheap to replace. You can even get tinted ones to wear outdoors with UV protection. The problem with ready made glasses is that the prescription is the same in both lenses and our eyes rarely need the same strength in both lenses. They do come in different magnifications so try them on to determine what works best for you. Examine them carefully for any bubbles or defects in the glass. If they are not too far from your normal prescription they will probably work well, but if you notice any headaches or eyestrain, visit your eye doctor for a custom pair.
None of us like to think about getting older, but the need for single vision reading glasses is most likely inevitable. Ladies, you can have fun with them. Try some different colors or patterns. There are a lot of frames to choose from. If you dont like them, its not an expensive commitment. There are also a lot of different options for men from basic black Clark Kent frames to rimless and wire rimmed options. These are not meant to replace prescription glasses so if you have other eye issues, visit a doctor.
