Reading Glasses Half Can Be The Perfect Fit

I think most of us probably had a teacher at some point who peered at us over her half frame glasses with a look of disapproval for some infraction of the rules. I always thought they looked particularly stern in those glasses. Hey, they worked for Ben Franklin. Reading glasses with half frames actually do have a purpose. You can look down and see what you are reading and writing and easily look over the half frame to see what’s going on around you. Those teachers knew what they were doing. Their reading glasses half lenses really did the trick.

Ben Franklin was the inventor of the bifocal. He grew tired of changing his glasses and had them cut in half and put the close up lenses on the bottom and the distance lenses on top. Most pictures of him show him wearing the little half glasses. Early reading glasses were likely made by Italian monks using polished quartz as early as the thirteenth century. As with a lot of other things, the Chinese were using glasses very early as well.

They used smoky quartz to make early sunglasses. They had no corrective powers but did protect the eyes from the sun.

Today many people find half frame reading glasses stylish. They come in all kinds of colors and patterns. Some have frames that are curved at the top and others have frames that are only on the bottom of the lenses. They are made for both men and women and are available in a convenient folding style. I have a pair that is very slim and easily carried in purse. They do come in handy reading menus and tiny price tags, but I personally don’t think they are all that attractive. I have seen people who look great in them. I am just not one of them.

If you are someone who does a lot of reading and writing or even fine sewing, reading glasses half lenses may be a good option for you. I think they would also be useful in many hobbies like jewelry making or tying flies for fishing. People who work with miniatures would also find them very useful. Hey, if you just love the way you look in them, go for it.
