Computer Reading Glasses May Become A Must

Did you know that regular reading glasses are not appropriate for working on a computer for along periods of time? Yep, the blurred vision and eye strain associated with computer use even have a name, CVS, computer vision syndrome. It seems that the visual demands of computer work vary quite a bit from other activities. Who knew? If you don’t need prescription eyewear and are having discomfort while doing computer work, you may want to consider prescription computer reading glasses.

Computer screens are typically 20-26 inches from the user’s eyes. This is considered the intermediate zone of vision. Most reading glasses are made to correct near vision only.

Even bifocals only correct near and distance vision. Trifocals and progressive lenses do have some lens power for intermediate vision; it is not enough to work comfortably on the computer. People often suffer eyestrain and blurred vision and try to compensate by leaning forward. This leads to neck and shoulder pain. Studies have shown that computer glasses improve worker productivity so maybe your employer will pay for them. It’s worth a try.

The simplest type of computer glasses is single vision lenses that have a modified lens power to give the most comfortable view of the screen. These lenses relax the amount of accommodation required to keep objects in focus at the distance of the computer screen and provides the largest field of view. Occupational progressive lenses are no line multifocal lenses that correct intermediate and some distance vision. These lenses are not recommended for driving or other vision tasks because the distance vision correction is not sufficient. Your ophthalmologist or optometrist can advise you as to the best choice.

To provide maximum viewing comfort, your lenses should contain an anti-reflective coating to reduce the glare. A light tint is also helpful in reducing glare from harsh overhead lighting often found in offices. It is best to purchase your computer reading glasses from an eye care professional rather than over the counter. Prior to your eye exam measure from the bridge of your nose to the computer screen so your eye doctor can prescribe the best option for you. If you take these steps, your work day will be a lot more comfortable and you’ll be a lot more productive.
